PAWSitive Supporters was started with some help from a friend…………Mardi Wolfson. I met Mardi several years ago when I started driving her to cancer treatments. Mardi had an aggressive brain cancer and needed rides to doctor appointments, treatments, and stays in the hospital. On the morning I first was to meet her, I was stopped at the light on the corner of Roswell Rd. and Fairground Rd. I looked to my right and saw a beautiful yellow lab tied to a tree. That dog had been out that morning in the terrible storm and looked frightened and scared. Mardi’s appointment was in 10 minutes and it was my first time picking her up so I called Animal Control to come pick her up as I pulled into Mardi’s driveway. On the way to the appointment, I tell her about the lab and that I called to get her picked up. She yells at me saying I should h ave picked up the dog and that being late to get her would have been acceptable even though it was my first time driving her. She says getting the dog would have been more important than picking her up.
When Mardi was ready to be picked up, I told her we would have to pass that corner where the dog was and asked her to look as we went by to see if she had been picked up. She was still there. So I pulled over into the parking lot next to the tree and together we rescued the lab. We called a friend who does rescue and she took her in, named the lab Mardi, and found a great home for her.
Mardi and I became friends, sharing dog stories on each trip to the doctor or the hospital. She only wanted to hear the happy ending stories, saying the sad ones made her too sad. Mardi’s cancer returned after her first surgery, and she lost her fight at that point. We were friends for two years, and I made a promise to myself that if I was able to start a non-profit to help dogs in Cobb County, I’d dedicate the efforts to her. Mardi’s estate donated funds to start the non-profit and I know she is smiling down on us knowing we are going to make a difference in the lives of the homeless animals in Cobb County.
Thank You Mardi and Macie pictured at right for your friendship and your shared loved of animals, and your inspiration to start PAWSitive Supporters.
